Black Corner Cinema: A Reference Private Theater Near Vienna

9-07-2026

Near Vienna, Austria, an exceptional high-end home cinema project has been completed: Black Corner Cinema. This is a private cinema designed not as a demonstration showroom but as a fully functional space for everyday movie watching, concerts, sports broadcasts, and family entertainment at a reference level.

The project was entirely designed, engineered, built, and calibrated by Heimkinobau GmbH. The cinema brings together technologies from MAG Theatron, Trinnov Audio, Barco Residential, madVR, Cineak, and Control4 in one fully integrated system. The result is a private cinema where professional design, acoustic integration, precise calibration, and high-end components work together so naturally that the technology almost disappears and the experience takes center stage.

Black Corner Cinema was the result of a long wait. The owner had been planning his own cinema for many years, and the room itself was already part of the concept when the home extension was built. The space was deliberately excavated approximately 50 to 60 cm deeper to create proper tiered seating geometry without the need for an excessively high riser. As a result, access to the room remains convenient, while the seating positions are correctly aligned with the screen.

The visual centerpiece of the room is a 4.40-meter Display Technologies screen with automatic four-way masking. Its 2.2:1 format makes it highly flexible across different types of content, while the madVR Envy Extreme MK3 video processor automatically detects the image format and controls the masking. For the viewer, this creates a simple and natural user experience: the system adapts itself to the film instead of forcing the owner to keep adjusting settings manually.

Behind the screen is the MAG Theatron AVALON Screen Wall Array, a main loudspeaker system developed for uncompromising private cinemas. In this project, it works together with eight 21-inch AVALON SUBs: four positioned behind the screen and four more integrated into the rear wall. This configuration provides the foundation for Trinnov WaveForming, where the goal is not simply maximum bass output but accuracy, speed, and control across the entire listening area.

A separate milestone of this project is the first worldwide use of the new AVALON SUR, announced by MAG Theatron at ISE 2026 in February. These loudspeakers were created as a logical extension of the flagship AVALON concept. Installed in the side and rear channels, they are voiced to match the front Screen Wall system and also use an Air Motion Transformer in the high-frequency section, which is essential for consistent tonal balance between the front stage and the surround field. The ceiling channels in Black Corner Cinema also use a new MAG Theatron model: CS66, a larger and more powerful evolution of the well-proven CS44.

In large private cinemas, the final result is defined not only by the equipment list but also by how the system performs in the actual room. That is why the final tuning was carried out on site. The team worked together with the owner, evaluating the system across different movie scenes, music tracks, and concert material. This approach helps find the right balance between measurement-based precision and the personal perception of the viewing experience.

The interior of Black Corner Cinema is also part of the overall concept. The dark room, with its strong architectural geometry, features angled wall and ceiling elements based on a consistent design logic. This gives the cinema a distinctive character, visually adds depth to the space, and avoids turning the room into an overloaded decorative environment. Materials, fabrics, carpet, and lighting elements were not selected separately but as parts of one integrated environment.

Comfort is provided by Cineak seating. The low backrest design keeps the listener’s ears unobstructed, which is especially important for accurate perception of the surround field and immersive audio. The seats are integrated into the Control4 system, allowing them to return to their default position with a single command. It may seem like a small detail, but it clearly shows the level of system integration throughout the entire project.

A separate technical room made it possible to move the Barco Freya+ projector, processing, switching, amplification, and network infrastructure outside the cinema space. The rack system includes an R_volution Player, Control4 Core 3, madVR Envy Extreme MK3, Trinnov Altitude 32, Trinnov Amplitude 16 and AVALON AMP amplifiers. This keeps the cinema room acoustically and visually clean, while the equipment operates in a controlled environment with dedicated ventilation.

Why did Heimkinobau choose the MAG Theatron AVALON Screen Wall for the Black Corner Cinema?

For every project, we select the loudspeaker system that best meets the technical goals of the cinema. In this case, the AVALON Screen Wall exceeded every requirement without compromise. Its controlled directivity, exceptional dynamics, low distortion, and seamless integration with Trinnov WaveForming made it the ideal choice. Our objective was not simply maximum output, but precise, consistent, and effortless sound reproduction across every seat, creating a truly reference-level cinema experience.

Black Corner Cinema demonstrates exactly the approach MAG Theatron was created for: professional cinematic dynamics, precise localization, controlled low-frequency energy, and a coherent sound field in a private space. What matters here is interaction through thoughtful integration, with room architecture, acoustic treatment, loudspeakers, amplification, the video chain, automation, and final calibration working together as one system.
